Pretorius built for the big stage

The 20-year-old wicketkeeper-batsman has rapidly developed from a schoolboy prospect into a Proteas international.

Lhuan-dre Pretorius has wasted little time establishing himself as one of South African cricket’s brightest young talents.

Born in Potchefstroom on 27 March 2006, the left-hander attended St Stithians College before completing his schooling at Cornwall Hill College.

Pretorius gained international recognition at the 2024 U19 World Cup, where he finished as South Africa’s leading run-scorer. He made 287 runs in six matches at an average of 57.40 and was selected in the ICC’s team of the tournament.

He carried that promise into domestic cricket, scoring 120 from 184 deliveries on his first-class debut for the Titans against the Warriors in December 2024.

His major breakthrough arrived during the 2025 SA20. Opening the batting for Paarl Royals, Pretorius smashed 97 from 51 balls on debut against Sunrisers Eastern Cape.

He finished the tournament as the leading run-scorer, amassing 397 runs in 12 matches at a strike rate of 166.81.

Pretorius’s attacking approach is centred around clean striking, quick footwork and powerful shots through the leg side. While naturally suited to T20 cricket, he soon showed that his game could succeed in the longer formats.

On his Test debut against Zimbabwe in Bulawayo in June 2025, Pretorius arrived at the crease with the Proteas struggling at 23-3.

The teenager responded with 153 from 160 deliveries, becoming South Africa’s youngest Test centurion at 19 years and 93 days. He also became the youngest man to score 150 on Test debut.

Pretorius continued his promising introduction to international cricket by making 57 from 60 balls on ODI debut against Pakistan later that year.

His rise also opened doors abroad. Pretorius joined Hampshire for the 2025 T20 Blast and Rajasthan Royals as an injury replacement before making his IPL debut in 2026.

He then struck his maiden T20 century during the 2026 Major League Cricket season, hammering an unbeaten 102 from 52 balls for San Francisco Unicorns. Pretorius finished the tournament with 465 runs at a strike rate of 176.14.

His progress continued during the T20I tri-series in Namibia. Pretorius struck a career-best 94 from 51 balls against Zimbabwe, hitting three sixes and 12 fours to help South Africa reach the final.

“I am just glad we won. Milestones can wait,” he said after receiving the player-of-the-match award.

Still only 20, Pretorius has already produced significant innings at youth, domestic, franchise and international level.
