Jim Harbaugh: We were too sloppy

Jim Harbaugh: We were too sloppy

Sunday night saw John Harbaugh win his first game as the head coach of the Giants, but it wasn't a great day for the whole Harbaugh family.

Jim Harbaugh's Chargers came into Week 1 as the biggest favorite in the league, but anyone who backed them at home over the Cardinals went home a little poorer. The Cardinals never trailed and shut the Chargers out in the fourth quarter of a 26-14 win that left Harbaugh to say that "quite a few things" went wrong for his team. chickenroad.qpon

“Some uncharacteristic things happened. Give them credit for making them happen,” Harbaugh said at his press conference. “I would call it sloppy at times. Too sloppy. That’s something we need to get fixed.”

Harbaugh cited seven penalties, but there were also two turnovers, a blocked punt and the offense failing to convert multiple times on fourth downs. The offense was limited to 268 yards overall, which didn't fit with the enthusiastic praise that Harbaugh lavished on quarterback Justin Herbert and offensive coordinator Mike McDaniel throughout the offseason.

That duo will have more chances to get things right, but the first look at this year's Chargers looked a lot like the last glimpse of the 2025 version and that's not where anyone with the team hoped to find themselves.

Ashton Jeanty: We're building a new culture that's going to win games

When the Raiders took running back Ashton Jeanty at the top of the first round in 2025, they had performances like Sunday's in mind.

Jeanty ran 23 times for 102 yards and caught a pair of touchdowns in a 27-13 win over the Dolphins. That came after Jeanty missed extended time this summer with an ankle injury, but he showed no signs of it on Sunday and the Raiders showed no signs of being the overmatched team that went 3-14 last season.

“The past is the past,” Jeanty said in a postgame press conference. “We’re moving forward, and we’re not worried about what happened last year. This is a new team, new staff, and we’re building a new culture here. And that’s a culture that’s going to win football games.”

There was a lot of talk about the Raiders turning the corner when they beat the Patriots in Week 1 under Pete Carroll last year, but they promptly went on a four-game losing streak that was much more indicative of how the year would play out. Klint Kubiak's charge will be making sure that the positives against Miami remain in place and riding Jeanty like they did on Sunday will likely be part of that plan.

Spanish GP plans to change Madring after fierce criticism from F1 drivers

  • New track for Spanish GP frustrated drivers and fans

  • McLaren’s Stella: ‘It’s impossible to attempt overtaking’

Discussions are already under way to change the layout of Formula One’s newest circuit after driver condemnation of the Madring during its inaugural Grand Prix. The race in Madrid was won by Mercedes’ Kimi Antonelli, but it was notable for being a procession with overtakes failing to reach double digits over 57 laps. Drivers were left frustrated and disappointed at an opportunity that had been lost, resulting in a chorus of criticism.

“I don’t know how someone looks at this design and goes: ‘mint’,” said the defending world champion, Lando Norris, who finished third. “There’s a lot of opportunity. They can make it into a track that’s good for racing and I’m excited to come back here next year if they can make these changes.
